Uncontrolled vibrations are the biggest enemy of good sound. In speakers, they can have a negative impact on the cabinet, the drivers, other crucial internal parts and even the speaker cables. The damage often only becomes apparent once the effect is removed. The best component supports will provide isolation in both directions, to and from the mounting surface. Properly engineered decoupling will block the transmission path between the two.

With Audio Physic Vibration Control Feet, there is no direct contact between the component and the surface upon which it rests. On the standard VCFs, the weight of the speaker rests on a very strong mesh fabric specially designed to eliminate the transmission of all vibrations. The fabric structure converts all kinetic energy into tensile forces.

The high-end version, VCF Magnetic, achieves even higher levels of isolation using powerful magnets with opposing polarity, effectively floating the speaker above the ground on a magnetic field.

A small investment with a huge difference

To isolate or eliminate unwanted vibrations has always been the prime goal driving Audio Physic's many technical innovations. Audio Physic takes a holistic approach, looking at the speaker and how it interacts with the room acoustically and mechanically. The most common support for speakers is some form of rigid spike or cone. Metal spikes have been a simple, tried-and-tested solution of choice for a long time, and they are indeed effective -- that's why most Audio Physic speakers ship standard with screw-in spikes.

But these are often incorrectly labeled as isolating elements. In fact, these devices actually couple vibrations from the speaker cabinet to the structure and nearby surfaces. This energy is then radiated back into the room by excited surfaces as well as bleeding into adjacent spaces. 

For source and amplification components, rigid supports are equally detrimental to sonic performance. Turntables and cartridges are the most vulnerable to vibration. High fidelity vinyl reproduction requires these devices to convert microscopically small undulations into electrical signals that are amplified by your signal chain. The most benign effect is a subtle loss of sonic accuracy. In more extreme circumstances, an undesirable coupling of vibration will cause feedback and mistracking. 

Digital sources like CD transports and D/A converters are not immune either. Vibration affects the accuracy of data read, stability of the various clocks, and noise level due to microphonics. Microphony is a phenomenon wherein individual components in electronic devices transform mechanical vibrations into an unwanted signal (noise or feedback). Vacuum tubes, solid-state electronics, and electrical conductors are susceptible to these effects.
